Obituary For Gustav Arnold Borger

Gustav Arnold Borger passed away peacefully in Grande Prairie on June 30, 2026 at the age of 93 years. Gus was born in Lymburn, Alberta to Katharina and Walter, July 14, 1932, the fifth of six children. He went to Edmonton at the age of 15 for grade nine, and high school, where he attended Concordia College. He met Iris Jesse Jensen, on a blind date in 1956 and was engaged two weeks later. Iris and Gus married in August of 1957. They had six children in eleven years and eventually settled east of High Level in the Rocky Lane area. Gus’s ambitions and thirst for knowledge led him to many employment opportunities such as to the high Arctic where he worked on the construction of the DEW line, truck driving, building houses, farming, oilfield maintenance and construction, and goldmining. In their retirement years they moved to Rycroft and eventually to the Grande Prairie area. His hobbies ranged from playing fastball, competitive wrestling and ping pong, obtaining his pilot’s licence and flying his Cessna 180, curling, golfing, card playing (cribbage and gin) and watching all sports on TV. Tennis was his favorite.

Gus leaves behind daughters Janis (Roy Erickson), Cynthia (Roger Gauthier), Charlotte (Brent Hauger) and Lila Borger, his son Walter Borger and Andrei Frizorguer (Andrea), seventeen grandchildren and thirty great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Iris, his son Tyson, and his son-in-law Martin Ellis, also all of his siblings and their spouses.

Gus was an avid storyteller and comedian. Everyone who knew him was entertained by his unique sense of humor. He was an affectionate and loving father and grandfather. We will miss him.

A celebration of life will take place on Tuesday, July 14th, 2026 at 11:00 am at Bear Creek Funeral Home, at 11802-99 Ave, Grande Prairie, Alberta. In the spirit of story telling, we invite all to share stories of Gus at his celebration of life.

    I was so pleased to meet Gustav who was my father, William Borger's, first cousin. Gustav gave me some of my family history and a picture of my great grandfather. My dad and Gustav never met, in person, but I did get to meet Gus's father, Walter, a number of times in Calgary when he was visiting his son, John. Praying for the cherished Borger family. I am his cousin and his siblings, but I didn't know him or his brothers and sister personally for many years due to the political circumstances in our country, when any communication with relatives living outside our country was punishable by social harassment. But Gustav became the person who opened up for my family an opportunity, unimaginable at that time in our country, to experience a different life – one full of freedom, self-determination, growth, and the fulfillment of all life plans for my children and me. He was able to help us get to Canada, and for 35 years now, we have been happily living in this beautiful country! Such actions will never be forgotten, and the warmest memories of Gustav as a person with a big, loving heart will forever remain in our hearts.
