Obituary For Gaylene Joyce Dyck

May 2, 1943 - August 9, 2026

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Gaylene Joyce Dyck of Grande Prairie, Alberta. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, GG, sister, cousin, auntie, and friend.

Mom grew up on a farm in the Banana Belt south of High Prairie, the daughter of Albert and Madge Babkirk and sister of Lynne, Rick, Donna and Kerri. While working in a grocery store in High Prairie, she caught the eye of her future husband Bill, a dashing young hockey player newly-arrived from Saskatchewan. They were married for nearly 64 years, raising 3 devoted children: Vaughn (Wenda), Shannon (Kelly) and Dana (Pam). She adored her grandchildren: Tonya, Raegan, Rylan, Keira, Janais, and Kennedy, and she treasured her great-grandchildren: Zachary, Piper, Colson, and Reeves.

Mom was an entertainer and music was her cornerstone, singing and playing piano by ear from a young age while accompanying her dad on his harmonica, eventually joining a band during her teen years. Her extended family and friends have fond memories of harmonizing with her at jam sessions over many decades. She played the organ at Dad’s Peace River Stampeder hockey games during the 60’s, perched in a tiny booth above the goalie net. Later, she entertained her community at a retirement park in Yuma, Arizona, including playing piano and doing stand-up comedy routines. Additionally, she was a member of Peace Players where she performed in theatre productions. Mom’s other interests included golfing the spectacular Creston course for 25 years, curling, crocheting afghans for her many loved ones, gardening, playing cards, and volunteerism. She was a proud and dedicated supporter of her family’s many sporting and fine arts activities. Mom was often the magnet in the room, drawing others in with her spicy sense of humour and fun-loving nature. She was a loyal and loving family member and friend, a difference-maker in so many lives. We will miss her dearly.

Mom’s extended family will celebrate her life at a private gathering in the fall. If so desired, online donations can be made in Mom’s honour to the Alzheimer’s Society @ alzheimer.ca.

    Sending deepest condolences to the entire Dick family. My wife Jill's parents, Bernice and Arnold Cameron, were very great friends with Bill and Gaylene and this news is sad indeed. I personally remember Gaylene taking over the piano in our band at Tiane's in Peace River more than once and Bonney Maroney is burned into my brain. She was a special lady and will be missed.

    I knew Gaylene since I was a young child. I always enjoyed the music that Gaylene, her dad Albert, and my dad Warren would play, and sing together. It was by chance that I married her cousin Craig Perry. Although it's been many, many years since seeing her, I have always had fond memories of Gaylene, of her laugh, and her warm smile.     Our sincere condolences to Bill and family for the loss of such a good person. She was so vibrant and full of life and loved by everyone who knew her. Such a surprise to hear of her passing. Gaylene was the life of the party, made people laugh with her funny surprises at parties, singing and piano playing, dances, curling, camping. Wherever Gaylene was, people enjoyed her company.
