Obituary For Edwin (Ed) Robert Clifford Widdifield

July 15, 1957 – March 16, 2024

Edwin (Ed) Robert Clifford Widdifield, age 66, passed away peacefully on March 16th, 2024, in Edmonton with his devoted family by his side. He was a loving husband, supportive father, cherished grandfather, friend, and dedicated hockey coach.

Born on July 15th, 1957, in High Prairie Alberta, to Jean and Walter Widdifield. Ed lived a life filled with passion and purpose. He was known for his kind heart, honest nature, infectious laughter, friendships, his commitment to the hockey community and most importantly his unwavering love for his family.

Family was everything to Ed. For 47 years he was married to the love of his life Janice, who stood by his side for better or worse. The couple enjoyed the adventures that life had in store for them, always side by side. Their unwavering commitment held strong as they started a family, welcoming their two boys, Michael, and Ryan. Ed supported them in their love for sports and throughout their hockey careers - as a mentor, a coach, and proud father. Over the years, the hockey community became like a second family to Ed and Janice bringing them both so much joy. He was a pillar of strength for his family and provided guidance to both his birth sons and all those he coached.

Ed was retired from Weyerhaeuser Canada with 45 years of dedicated service. He was highly respected and formed long-lasting friendships. His last roll as Road Maintenance manager gave him the opportunity to work in nature- an environment he enjoyed most. Ed loved nothing more than to take his dog Hunter along for a ride so she could run free in the bush.

Ed had a zest for life. He enjoyed gathering with family and friends, especially at Eagle Bay. He found joy spending time with his grandchildren and family, being on the lake, enjoying the view from his deck, or welcoming friends for a sing-along around the campfire. Ed relaxed by hunting, cheering on his favorite team (the Oilers), driving and the open road, sharing meals with family and friends, and live music whenever he got the chance.

Ed is remembered by his beloved wife Janice, son Mike and his family, Annalisa, Avalyn, Carson, and Sienna; Ed’s late son Ryan’s girls Shauna, Murphy, and Tyler; brother Keith (Roberta), stepsiblings Clinton and Shaunna (Randy); father and mother in-law Bob and Jean Stevenson, Dale (Gail) Stevenson, and Brenda Berube; chosen son Rob Shipway and his family, Kristina, Sydney, and Spencer. Ed will also be remembered by his nieces and nephews Dustin, Dailyn, Jeremy, Dillon, Dakota, Tania, Nicole, Danny, and Rachelle, as well as many great-nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Ed was predeceased by his son Ryan whom he loved unconditionally, his Uncle Edwin, baby sister Sandra, his father Walter, and his grandparents May and Cliff.

Ed’s warm smile, wise advice, and honest and passionate nature touched the lives of everyone he met, and he will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Condolences to all of Ed's family and friends. My earliest memories of him are from some 50+ years ago when he would come in from Debolt as we were playing on the same house league hockey team in GP at the time. Later on, whenever our paths would cross he always had a quick "Hi" and smile. Truly one of the nicest of guys.
