Obituary For Darrold Albert Banta

April 9, 1945 – January 10, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our father Darrold Banta on January 10, 2024.

Darrold was born in Calgary on April 9, 1945 to Floyd and Grace Banta. He was the second oldest of three children.

Darrold was an active hockey player in his younger years, and enjoyed the sport as a spectator as he grew older. Along with hockey, Darrold was an avid sports fan, baseball, curling and golf. He developed a love for playing golf with family and friends. He passed his love of sports on to his son and they have golfed numerous courses all over Canada and the US together. He was part of a recreational golf team, with 3 of his closest friends.

Darrold was a longtime employee of the AEUB. His career as an inspector in the oilfield began in 1970 and moved him from Southern Alberta to Northern Alberta in the 32 years. After Darrold retired in 2002 from the AEUB, He joined the Ken Sargent team as a shuttle driver, and was there until the time of his passing.

Darrold lived for his children and in March of 2011 he welcomed his first and only granddaughter, Elizabeth, who became his shining light.

Darrold is survived by his children; Gregory Banta and Melissa Banta, granddaughter Elizabeth Derksen, nieces Sharon (Norman) Foshaug, Laine and Breanna, Debbie (John) Iversen, Luke and Abbey, Beverlee (Ken) Collinge, Amber and Kyle, Peggy Fulkerth, Ben (Christine) Fulkerth.

He was predeceased by his father Floyd Banta, mother Grace Banta (Key), sisters Beverly Banta, and Anna Mae Fulkerth (Banta) and many beloved aunties and uncles.

As per Darrold’s wishes there will not be a celebration of life. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the local heart and stroke foundation.

Darrold was the first person to welcome us to the neighborhood when we moved in 2 years ago. He was a warm and welcome presence in the neighborhood, though we didn't get to know him well we will miss his kind waves and snow blower chats in the winter.

Thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. I will always recall with fondness our daily ribbing of each other and his famous(to me) words "god damn boy". RIP my friend. Shannon MacRae - Ken Sargent GMC

Darrold was part of my childhood as he was an avid hockey and ball player in Didsbury, playing along side of my father Miller McCoy. Mom and dad spoke fondly of Darrold over the years as he popped in for visits. Our condolences to his family. Judy Edwards.

I am so, so very saddened to hear of Darrold's passing. I had worked with him at KSGMC. No matter where we bumped into each other, he would always take the time to say hello, how am I doing. His heart ran deep. But the love for Gregory, Melissa, and his little sweetie Elizabeth was always spoken. He is a truly beautiful person, and will be missed. Janice

Sincere sympathies to Melissa and Greg. I had the pleasure of working with Darrold in the late 70's and we became and remained good friends. I will miss our birthday phone calls.

Known Darrold since my early teens. Lots of great memories from his days with Didsbury Ramblers. Really enjoyed the golf trips and weekends the last number of years. He was a family man and they always came first. Going to miss you my friend. Duncan

Uncle Darrold was the best! He will always be remembered as the fun, halarious uncle who everyone got along with. There are so many childhood memories including all the cousins at Grandma Chesney's that will always be a part of me. Uncle Darrold came to my wedding and I was proud to have him there. Sandra, Kerri, James and I visited him in Grande Prairie many years ago and he treated us like his own; going out in the mornings to bring home fresh Tim Horton donuts. I know Melissa and Greg were his world and I hope they find comfort in all the memories we shared. Heather K

I'm so sorry to hear that Darrold has died. I was born to his Aunt Marjory (Key) Lait, on his first birthday. We cousins all hung out together til my family moved to Ontario when I was 5 years old. May all your family find strength and peace at this very sad time. Janice (Lait) Rock.
